TransAsia Plane Crashes Into Keelung river, 9 Killed

Taiwanese TransAsia Airways plane with 58 passengers and crew on board crash-landed in a Keelung river in Taipei  on Wednesday after hitting an elevanted bridge, at least 9 died and many dozens were unaccounted.

According Taiwan’s aviation agency the twin-engine turboprop regional plane was carrying 58 people at the time included 53 passengers and five crew.

As television footage showed passengers wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of the river.Emergency rescue officials in inflatable boats crowded around the partially submerged fuselage, lying on its side in the river, trying to help those on board.

The accident happened a few minutes after the plane took off from Taipei’s Songshan airport en route to the island of Kinmen.

Last July, 48 people were killed after another domestic TransAsia flight crashed onto houses during a storm on the Taiwanese island of Penghu.
